    Perfect Motivation Letter for Canadian University

    Do you want to study in Canada? Have the perfect university in mind but aren’t sure how to write the Perfect Motivation Letter? Not to worry, if this is something you generally struggle with, you’re not alone. There a certain tricks to writing an effective letter to motivate your application to study at a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

    What is a DLI?

    A Designated Learning Institution or DLI is a government-approved university or college where International students are allowed to enroll to get a Canadian qualification. There are over 300 to choose from nationwide and once you’ve chosen your perfect university or college, the last thing you want to do is spoil your chances by messing up your motivational letter.

    There are currently over 530,500 international students in Canada, with more than 400,000 new Canada student visas issued every year, 60 percent of which will more than likely plan to apply for permanent residency once they’ve graduated.

    What exactly is a motivation letter?

    A motivation letter is a component of your scholarship application that functions similarly to a cover letter in a job application. A motivation letter is a document in which you introduce yourself to the admissions office and persuade them to approve your scholarship application by highlighting your accomplishments, talents, and strengths.

    When thousands of students are competing for the same scholarship, a motivation letter is an excellent way to explain who you are as a person, your hobbies, future objectives, and your love for the area you are studying on a very personal level.

    However, just like any other paper necessary in scholarship applications, this is an academic document sent to certain authorized persons, and as such, it must be written in a specific manner.

    Format for Writing a Perfect Motivation Letter for a Canadian Scholarship Application:

    • Title of the letter- Letter of motivation for the scholarship you’re applying to
    • Your full name and contact details (Phone and email must be included. Social networks are optional.)
    • Name of the university you are applying to with its address
    • The date
    • Dear Sir/ Madam (You can address the person directly if you know their name; this is important because addressing someone by name will immediately grasp their attention)
    • Introduction
    • Body of letter
    • Concluding paragraph (with acknowledgment and summary of the body)
    • Best regards and Signature

    Follow the given standard formatting to make your letter eye-friendly at first glance, unless it has been specified otherwise:

    • Left-aligned
    • One-inch page margins
    • 1 or 1.15 line spacing
    • 12 font size in Times New Roman or Arial
    • Double-spacing between paragraphs

    How to Write a Perfect Motivation Letter for a Canadian Scholarship Application?

    #1 Research Goals and Novelty:

    The first step is to research the university you will be attending and determine what the scholarship sponsor is looking for while sifting through thousands of applications. You can do this by visiting the university’s website and, if possible, speaking with alumni.

    Do your research for your specific field and university so that you can focus more on experiences, abilities, and achievements that fulfill their requirements when preparing your application. For example, if the institution takes pleasure in developing future leaders, they will be more interested in your experiences that demonstrate your leadership and communication skills in addition to your academics.

    Furthermore, by conducting research prior to applying, you will be able to establish whether or not you fit all of the university’s standards.

    #2 Create an Outline:

    After you’ve done your research and determined which points you want to emphasize, write an outline of how you intend to arrange your letter. The format given above gives you a basic outline that you need to follow. You only need to pick whether you want to use a 5-paragraph structure or a 7-paragraph structure from there. In the first, your body will only have three paragraphs, whereas in the second, you can have up to five.

    Next, jot down briefly the points you need to cover in each paragraph. Remember that a motivation letter is read quickly (approximately 20 seconds), so you only have a page or so to make your case. Include only the most relevant qualifications and emphasize experiences that demonstrate your enthusiasm for the field.

    #3 Introduction writing:

    The opening allows you to attract the reader’s attention and pique their interest in what you could have to offer as a potential student at their university.

    Begin the introduction by introducing yourself, your level of education, and the program to which you have applied. Then, capture their attention by expressing something that immediately demonstrates your interest and dedication to the area, and follow it up with a significant achievement that is relevant to the scholarship.

    The idea is to pique their interest in you, and by enticing them with your accomplishments and passionate words, you may elaborate on why they should welcome you in the body of your letter.

    #4 Composing the letter’s body:

    Most people divide the body of their message into three paragraphs. This section of the letter will mostly discuss what makes you the greatest possible candidate for the scholarship, your academic and future aspirations, and your enthusiasm for the scholarship program.

    You will include your academic standing, achievements, relevant voluntary activities, and acquired talents in the opening paragraph of the body. Simply identifying your skills isn’t enough; describing how you obtained various skills, rather than offering a general answer, earns you extra points.

    Remember that anyone can claim to have a 4.0 GPA and specific attributes, but the more evidence you provide to back up your claims, the higher your chances of having your application approved. The goal is to make it stand out as an ideal candidate by making it unique.

    You will explain why you want the scholarship in the second paragraph of the body. Again, to improve your case, this is the paragraph in which you convey your enthusiasm for the scholarship program, your interest in the topic, and how the scholarship will help you. This is when all of your research on the university and the program comes in useful since you can be more particular, such as talking about which instructors you’re excited to learn from or which campus facilities you’re most enthusiastic to use.

    Because you’re applying to Canada, it’ll be beneficial to include good reasons for why you want to study in Canada as well as what qualities you possess that will aid you while you’re overseas.

    The third paragraph in the body will then discuss future plans. What do you intend to accomplish with your degree? How will it benefit your future, and how will you use it to make an influence in your field?

    #5 Writing the conclusion and signing off:

    Simply summarize the important facts that demonstrate your interest and establish yourself as a worthy applicant in your conclusion. Then, if possible, request a personal interview to further discuss your application (however this will most likely only be relevant if you are applying for a research grant and want to discuss your ideas in detail).

    Tips to keep in mind when Writing a Motivation Letter:

    • Keep your letter 1 page long with a word limit of around 500- 1000.
    • Use logical reasoning and persuasive language to convince the scholarship committee but don’t make it sound like you’re bragging or begging for the scholarship.
    • Use simple language, and keep your sentences short, rather than forming complex sentences with a lot of technical wording that the reader might not necessarily be familiar with. Stay professional and do not use slang language in your letter either
    • Be personal in your letter. This one is especially important. The motivation letter is a chance for you to show the scholarship committee who you are, so instead of writing your letter based entirely on a template online, try to make it as unique and personal as possible. The committee will be reading thousands of letters, so focus more on writing things that will make you stand out from the rest of the competition.
    • Remember to focus on your strengths when writing the letter rather than bringing up your weak points and challenges you think you might face in the program. Remember, they need to know why you deserve the scholarship, not a reason to dismiss your application!
    • Lastly, once you have written your letter and proofread it, it’s always a good idea to have someone with a good grasp of the English language read through your letter and make sure you don’t have any grammatical errors.
