Age Requirement:

To be eligible for a full New Zealand Scholarship, you must be at least 18 years old when you begin your scholarship. This means that if you are 17 years old when you apply, you must wait until your 18th birthday to begin your scholarship in semester one.

Applicants applying for the Samoa Foundation intake may be as young as 17 years old when they begin their scholarship.

Applicants have no upper age limit. This means that if you are 18 or older, you are eligible to apply. However, for New Zealand Scholarships for university or tertiary students, we prefer applicants under the age of 40.

Academic Prerequisite:

Scholarship applicants who are successful must meet both the academic entry requirements and the English language requirements set by each educational institution. Check that you meet the academic entry requirements as well as the English language requirements.

You must select your preferred education institution and courses as part of the New Zealand Scholarships application process. Applicants for scholarships are not required to apply for admission to their preferred educational institutions or courses.

However, scholarship applicants must ensure that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and English proficiency required for their courses.

Course entry requirements are determined by your chosen educational institution, so check their website before applying for a New Zealand Scholarship.

Ph.D. candidates should begin looking for a supervisor as soon as possible. Ph.D. scholarship applicants should look for and email suitable Ph.D. supervisors at New Zealand universities early on. Applicants for Ph.D. scholarships who advance to the interview stage must produce evidence at the interview that they have either secured a supervisor or are in active conversations with a potential supervisor.

English Language Prerequisite:

When applying for a New Zealand Scholarship, you are not required to take an English language test or present English language test results.

If we choose you for the applicant shortlist during our scholarship selection process, you will be required to submit your English language exam results.

The New Zealand Government Scholarship Council accepts test results from the following four English proficiency assessment systems:

  1. IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) OR
